A second point of failure…

Gah. It seems I’ll be without the main PC for a couple of more days.

Over the weekend my main PC bluescreened twice. Neither time was I near the machine or paying attention (the first time I was sleeping, the second was while I was in the shower). I tried flashing the BIOS and also ran memtest86+ on it. The BIOS update took and memtest86+ didn’t slow any errors. So, I went with it and prayed all Sunday night that the BIOS update was all that the machine needed.

Well, after breakfast this morning, I decided to do some work on slipstreaming Service Pack 2 into my Windows XP Professional install CD, thus making a new CD that I could use to install WinXP with without needing a separate SP2 install. While the system was downloading SP2, it froze for about a minute, briefly bluescreened, and rebooted. When it came time to start loading Windows, I got an error message:

Disk read error
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

Fuck.

I went ahead and disconnected the PC from the cables behind my desk and took it into the office where I could hook it up to the servers’ KVM switch (so I could have the machine out and free and use the servers’ monitor and keyboard). I ran Western Digital’s Lifeguard Tools diagnostics to get official confirmation whether or not the drive was bad. The quick test came back fine, incredibly enough. However, when it started the full media test… the clicking coming from the drive alone was enough to tell me the drive was toast.

In a way, this is actually a relief, seeing as a number of things I noticed before now make a bit more sense. I had gotten errors when wiping the drive with DBAN, but hadn’t thought much of it. I had heard the clicking before, but had thought it was the IDE Zip drive which I rarely use anymore. Finally, this does explain a few of the mystery lockups the machine had before the video card crapped out. Still, though, this does mean I’m going to have to replace the drive. I’ll probably end up getting two Serial ATA drives and put them in a RAID 0 configuration (thus combining the two drives into one), and put the replacement 120 GB drive from Western Digital in a server.

Oh, well, in the meantime I’m stuck on the Powerbook again. Fun.

Christmas in Vegas…

Well, it’s official. We’ve decided to spend our Christmas in Las Vegas.

What we’ll do is leave Friday the 23rd, and come back on Monday the 26th. That way I don’t have to take any vacation time from work, seeing as I have the Friday and the Monday off.

Of course, this means we won’t be giving gifts to each other, but then, that’s all right. This will be our Christmas gift to ourselves.

So, the countdown begins… two months until our next Vegas vacation. :-)

Thursday morning ramblings…

Well, first off, traffic around here will be a little interesting next week, what with the World Series and all. Right now, the World Series is win-win for me; I was rooting for either the Astros and/or the White Sox (seeing as I’m originally from Chicago) to make it in. I’ll just have to remember not to watch the games themselves, as I know for a fact that I’m bad luck when watching. (The instant I tuned in on Monday, for example, it was the top of the 9th and the Astros took that opportunity to choke.) Still, like I said… no matter who wins, I’ll be happy.

I’m beginning to get a bit annoyed with the drive to work. When I drive to and from work, I listen to my iPod through my combination travel charger and FM transmitter. Usually I keep it on 89.1 FM, as that’s the one station on its range that’s the most empty. The past week, however, I’ve been getting an NPR station signal loud and clear, and it’s overpowering the iPod’s FM transmitter. What’s most insane about this is the fact that this particular NPR station is in San Antonio. I’m almost tempted to call them up and offer a donation if they’ll turn the power on their transmitters. Oh, well… it’s probably weather-related, but it’s still an annoyance.

Anyway, I need to get cracking on the interview for Jenn Dolari, and then do a bit more research on something for database backups, while continuing the whole support job thing… fun fun.

Scott Howell’s Interview w/ Me…

All right, kids, you know the drill, but here goes anyway…

Here are the rules:
1 — Leave a comment, saying you want to be interviewed.
2 — I will respond; I’ll ask you five questions.
3 — You’ll update your journal with my five questions, and your five answers.
4 — You’ll include this explanation.
5 — You’ll ask other people five questions when they want to be interviewed.

And away we go…

1.) Once being highly involved with band and music myself, do you ever regret not pursuing a career in music?

Not at all. In fact, to be perfectly honest, my main regret is not getting out sooner. I learned too late that in order to have a successful career in music (without teaching), one must be extremely dedicated, extremely insane, and/or extremely lucky. I was none of those, and I didn’t want to get into teaching. Music’s great as a hobby for me, but as far as jobs go I prefer where I’m at now.

2.) Though nothing to be ashamed of, you’ve never graduated college. Do you think you will ever go back and finish, or are you happy where you sit now with your current job?

I’m happy where I sit now with my current job, though I might very well go back to college and get an MIS degree. I haven’t really decided either way, however. If I do get a degree, it’ll much more in management than in programming, with maybe an accounting minor thrown in.

3.) If you won a million dollars today in the lottery, how would you spend it?

I wouldn’t, right away. I’d continue working, but make sure the money was invested somewhere where I could live comfortably on the interest.

4.) You are given 24 hours notice until the day you die. Assuming money wasn’t an issue and you were in normal physical shape, how would you spend your last day alive?

That’s a tough one. I’d probably make a few last calls, settle my affairs, and then … well, just find something spontaneous to do.

5.) In your three years so far with Mortal Kombat Online, do you think your time and effort was worh it?

Three years? We’re actually a couple of months from four years, officially. I’d like to think it was. When we started, we were just another MK website in a sea of MK websites. Since then, we’ve evolved to become the most popular MK fansite on the web. To this day it still amazes me when I see people who know of our site. I still can’t get over the fact that MK designers know us by sight. (For example, before the presentations at the last Gamers Day, I was walking out to the hall to get a drink. Ed Boon was talking to a couple of people, when he looked around and noticed me. I gave a little salute in greeting, and he smiled and waved.) It’s difficult sometimes, I admit, dealing with all of the stress and whatnot concerning the site… but then I get people thanking us for what we do, both among the community and from Midway, and it makes it all worthwhile.

Slow day….

Like the subject is saying, it’s kind of a slow day right now.

Not that I’m really complaining, mind you. I’m at the point right now where I’m really not up to dealing with a huge crisis. Of course, it doesn’t help that I had a filling meal for lunch. (I went with a coworker to Olive Garden and had salad and fettucine alfredo.) It probably would be less of a hassle, too, if I was going straight home after work. Instead, I have to go to Fry’s to pick up a USB 2.0 hub for my main PC. Then again, depending on how I feel, I might just decide to go straight home and not deal with Fry’s until Wednesday.

Though, one highlight of the day so far has been the fact that the soundtrack to Cirque du Soleil’s Ka was finally released, and that my copy arrived this morning. I haven’t taken the time to listen to it yet; I’ll probably import it into iTunes when I get home, replicate it back over to the iPod and to the main PC, and give it a listen tonight. I REALLY liked the music from Ka when I saw it, and am looking forward to listening to this CD. Of course, this will also end up being another CD that’s waiting to be put up, until such time as I get my cabinet shelves up…

Anyway, that’s about everything that’s going on here… guess I should go check my mail up at the front mail room… fun fun…

Torchwood — Starring John Barrowman

http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/news/cult/news/drwho/2005/10/17/25634.shtml

Captain Jack gets his own show.

Torchwood will debut on BBC Three late next year. Created by Russell T Davies it stars John Barrowman as Captain Jack.

“Torchwood will be a dark, clever, wild, sexy, British crime/sci-fi paranoid thriller cop show with a sense of humour – the X Files meets This Life,” says Russell T Davies.

“It’s a renegade bunch of investigators charged by the British government to find alien technology that has fallen to Earth,” BBC Three controller Stuart Murphy told The Independent.

The show will be set in Cardiff, and will be 13 45-minute episodes, transmitting between series of Doctor Who. Confirmed writers include Sapphire and Steel creator PJ Hammond.

This should be VERY interesting. I thought Captain Jack made for a very interesting companion, and was disappointed he wouldn’t be returning to Doctor Who next season. This more than makes up for it, though…

Pandora’s Interview w/ Me…

Here are the rules:
1 — Leave a comment, saying you want to be interviewed.
2 — I will respond; I’ll ask you five questions.
3 — You’ll update your journal with my five questions, and your five answers.
4 — You’ll include this explanation.
5 — You’ll ask other people five questions when they want to be interviewed.

And off we go…

1. If you woke up and could suddenly arrange 3 things in your life to be exactly perfect and how you want them, what would those things be?

First off, I would be a hell of a lot less shy and more social than I am now. Then again, that’s a bit of a given. ;-)

Secondly, I would be in shape and not such a sucker for food. I’m going to try and do something about that, but as with any kind of addiction it’s difficult to overcome.

Third, I’d be living in Vegas making money on the poker tables. I’m not quite that confident in my own abilities, though, so I limit myself to the occasional poker game with coworkers and the bi-annual tournament a coworker holds.

2. Do you want children?

I honestly don’t know. I’ll cross that bridge once (if?) I settle down with the right woman. I’ve been told I’d make a great father, but we’ll see.

3. Has learning that you have aspergers syndrome affected your life in any way good or bad, and do you understand yourself any better because of the diagnosis?

It hasn’t really affected me in a good or bad way, other than the fact that yes, I DO understand now why my thought processes are so different from the average person’s. I can accept it and live with it. My only regret concerning it is my crippling case of shyness. I can deal with that, though.

4. What is your biggest pet peeve?

I have three of equal size. I hate when people waste my time. I hate out and out stupidity. I hate when people try to force their beliefs on others.

5. If you could be anywhere with anyone right now, where would you be and with whom?

That’s a pretty good question. For lack of a better answer, I’d have to say in Las Vegas (most likely at Caesar’s or the Luxor) playing blackjack or poker with Missy, with Blue Man Group tickets in hand for the night. It’d be a great night out with my best friend who I hadn’t seen in ages. :-)
